Southwestern Sunrise Tunisian Crochet Blanket

This is a lovely, soft blanket inspired by a woollen Navajo saddle blanket my parents have had for years.  I always loved the look of that blanket which had a beautiful colour pop of bright pink and orange stripes against a deep, navy background.  However, it was stiff and itchy and because of that we never actually used it.  I simply lay at the end of the bed for years.  This is my recreation, it has the eye-catching contrasting colours like the original blanket but with a beautiful snugly texture.

This is a great project for those who are new to Tunisian crochet because it is a simple repeat with no curling and very little counting.  However, it is a very large blanket measuring approx. 140cm x 180cm.  This is great as it can cover a sofa, double bed or a UK king size (US queen size). It looks great with or without the tassels and the durable acrylic means it washes well on wool care cycles with appropriate delicate detergents.

If you have never done Tunisian crochet before, it is worked on only one side.  There is no turning.  This means there is a very clear right side and wrong side.  However, both sides of this blanket have a nice texture similar to a knit effect.  This pattern is written for right hand crocheters although it could be adapted as the pattern repeat is very simple.

Special Stitches:

Tunisian Knit stitch (tks)- Insert hook from front to back in between front and back bars YO and pull through loop

Extended Knit stitch (tks,ch1) Insert hook from front to back in between front and back bars, YO and pull through loop, ch1 repeat

In this pattern I have included the return in every row therefore every row begins on the right hand edge with a single loop on the hook.  I have written it so that in every row there is the building pass and a return pass.  The outward pass is what changes depending on the row in this pattern.  The return pass remains the same.

Foundation Row:

In yarn A Ch 200

Outward pass: In the second chain from hook insert hook, YO and draw up a loop ( you will now have two loops on your hook), repeat in each chain to the end.

Return pass: YO and pull through 1 loop on your hook (this closes the end of the chain).

YO and pull through 2 loops on the hook, repeat to the end (when your hook is at the right edge of your work and there is only 1 loop on your hook)

  • Row 1

Outward pass: tks,ch1 in first stitch space, repeat until end, at the end insert hook in the    base of last outward row, YO pull up loop

Return pass: YO pull through 1 loop on hook to close end, [YO pull through 2 loops]*

  • Row 2: Outward pass: tks in first stitch space, repeat to end, in end of work insert hook into the base of the previous outward row, YO pull up loop

Return pass: YO pull through 1 loop on hook to close, [YO pull through 2 loops]*

  • Row 3-43: Continuing Midnight Blue Stripe: Repeat Rows 1 and 2 alternating until you have worked a height of 30 cm in Yarn A.  It took me 43 rows with my tension but I find it much easier to measure than row count on a large project.

  • Row 44: Outward pass: repeat Row 2; Return pass: YO and pull through 1 loop to close then change to colour B by YO and pull through 2 loops [YO pull through 2 loops]*

  • Row 45: Outward pass: tks,ch1 in first stitch space, repeat until end, at the end insert hook in the    base of last outward row, YO pull up loop

Return pass: YO pull through 1 loop on hook to close end, [YO pull through 2 loops]*

  • Row 46: Outward pass: tks in first stitch space, repeat to end, in end of work insert hook into the base of the previous outward row, YO pull up loop

Border:

Round 1:  Begin anywhere on the blanket with the right side facing you, attach yarn A.  Ch 2 and dc in every stitch until corner, 3dc in corner space and continue around the blanket edge.

When crocheting the border crochet over loose ends to save weaving in.  Continue to dc around the blanket to start.  Slip stitch into chain 2

Round 2:  Ch2, 1dc in each stitch of the previous round including the stitches around the corner, slip stitch into Ch2 to complete the round.  Fasten off and weave in ends.

This completes the blanket, add the optional tassel fringe with the following instructions.

Tassel Fringe:

29cm (11 ½ in) cardboard square to use as a template

Scissors

6 or 7mm crochet hook

Ruler

Starting from top of cardboard, wrap the yarn around template 8 times (cross top 8 times).  Cut the yarn and gently slide the loops off the cardboard pinching at the loops on the end without the loose ends.

Insert crochet hook through the back of the blanket at the corner of the blanket.  Take your yarn loops and gently hook the loops over the end of the crochet hook and pull the loops until the loops are equal on both sides.  Thread the opposite end through the loop and pull tight.  Continue to place tassels every 10cm (or evenly spaced for your blanket width).

You now have a beautiful and warm blanket to enjoy for years to come.  You may machine wash this blanket with Woolite or other wool/ yarn friendly detergent on a delicate or wool cycle at 30 degrees C.  Then lie flat to dry.
